Movie director turned podcaster Kevin Smith, along with his co-host, entertainment reporter and actor Ralph Garman, blasted Sony’s new Ghostbusters trailer this week. The duo dedicated about 7 minutes from the latest episode of their popular podcast “Hollywood Babble-On” to discuss the reasons why they feel the new trailer for the Ghostbusters reboot “sucks”.
It is important to mention that he is referencing the new movie coming out soon starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth. It is directed by Paul Feig. Kevin goes to great lengths to stress that he thinks the final product will actually be funny. Kevin and Ralph heap praise and tout the comedy chops of all those involved but have strong words for whomever edited the recent trailer.
Here are a few quotes from the segment:
“Bridesmaids, The heat and spy … unarguably all funny movies.”
“All of them have been very funny… This is not women can’t be funny bullshit. All these women are hysterical.”
“Whoever cut this trailer needs to be sat down. And I’m not going to call for their job to taken away from them but they need to be scolded.”
“It could have been all men with same jokes and nothing would have landed.”
“It still sucks.”
“There is no way all of them got together and didn’t make something funny.”
Some of their criticisms go on to include that use of the original music was badly needed and that the jokes being showcased in the trailer were highly unoriginal. Kevin attributes this to most likely not having been test screened with focus groups. Listen to full segment below:
